SMSF Australia can help you set up a new SMSF and assist you with the maize of compliance documents required and continue to support you through the establishment and the ongoing administration and operation of your SMSF.
Before beginning your SMSF Setup it is important to consider:
- What trustee structure do you want?

- Do you need a financial planner to help with fund investments or provide a strategic plan for the members?
- Understand the fees that are involved.

How do you start the SMSF set up process?
When you decide to set up a new SMSF contact us, and we can help you with the set-up process and answer any queries you have.
What do you want to call your SMSF?
Unlike a company an SMSF name is not unique but is registered on the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) when applying for an ABN. There is no requirement to have “SMSF”, “Superannuation” or “Super Fund” in the fund’s name but generally is included as it is easier for identification purposes (especially with banks and investment platforms), for example “Cooper Family Super Fund”.
What do you want to call your corporate trustee?
A company does have a unique name and you can search on the ASIC website to check name availability.
Complete an application
We will provide you with a form to collect your personal details to enable us to complete your SMSF set up. We will ask you to provide a photo ID which can be a passport or driver’s license.
Director ID
For those clients who are not already a director you will need to apply for your director ID via the ABRS.
Does your SMSF need to be registered for GST
Please call or email us if you are not sure about this.
Costs
Our fees to set up a new SMSF for $2,000 plus GST include the incorporation of a sole purpose trustee company, the legal fees for the SMSF Deed, the Electronic Service Address, the ABN and TFN registrations and the initial rollovers into the fund. We have one holistic fee for the lot rather than selling it piece by piece.
Corporate Trustee
The advantages of having a sole purpose trustee company include:
- Ease of administration which is especially important when a trustee changes as the title to all of the fund’s investments and bank accounts must be updated
- Sole member funds can have a sole director company as the SMSF trustee but cannot have a sole individual trustee
- The annual ASIC fee is currently only $70 and we lodge the company’s annual statement with ASIC as part of our annual pricing.
What happens next?
SMSF Australia attends to the documents required to establish the fund and the ATO registration which includes the application for the fund’s TFN and ABN.
SMSF Australia attends to the fund’s trust deed and organisation of a sole purpose trustee company using our SMSF lawyers.
An electronic service address (ESA) is required by all SMSFs to receive rollovers from other funds and external employer contributions. As part of the fund’s ongoing administration by SMSF Australia, we provide you with an ESA which is:
“smsfdataflow”
What are the final steps?
Open a bank account for your SMSF
On completion of the ATO registrations a bank account should be opened so contributions and rollovers from other funds can be deposited.
Rollover of existing super from other funds
At your request we can assist you in rolling over super from other funds into your new SMSF. There are a number of ways this can be done. Refer to our blog article on “How to rollover super into an SMSF”. Our set up costs include the accounting time to organise rollovers from existing super funds into your SMSF.
How to redirect employer contributions to your SMSF
Your employer needs a completed “Super standard choice form” which can be provided online via myGov or downloading a manual form from the ATO or your employer’s employee payroll software; and
a copy of the fund’s compliance status at Super Fund Lookup
What happens after my SMSF is set up?
- An annual fee is charged for ongoing SMSF accounting, audit fees and tax return preparation and lodgement as per our SMSF pricing
- An annual ASIC fee which is currently $70 for a sole purpose trustee company which is a substantial discount compared to other ordinary companies.
- We lodge the annual ASIC statement for a sole purpose trustee company which is included in our administration fee unlike a lot of other accountants and administrators.
- We provide the registered office for SMSF trustees at no additional cost.
You can call or email us with queries as part of our fixed fees.
