SMSF Setup Online | Establishing a Self Managed Super Fund

Yes, we can complete your SMSF Setup online without you needing to drive around between offices etc. In the digital world everything can be completed online including opening bank accounts for your new SMSF, depending on your bank of preference.
From our anecdotal experience the huge majority of new funds are setup online with our team seeing hundreds of Australians every year using our services to setup their own SMSF to control their superannuation and retirement goals independently of the politics and other pressures facing industry funds.
Keep in mind while the process of establishing a Self Managed Super Fund can be completed digitally it is still a major financial decision and if you are unsure if it is right for you then you should meet with a financial planner prior to making any final decisions.
What is the process to Set up an SMSF online?
Our simple process to complete an SMSF Setup Online involves you completing a simple online form providing us with the data we need to complete your new fund. This involves your personal details, proof of ID to pass AML compliance, directors identification number and of course choosing your SMSF Name. We provide support during this process via email, Zoom or phone calls to assist you to understand how the setup works in detail.
Setting up Corporate Trustee Online
The first step is to setup the corporate trustee for your SMSF. This is the company that acts as the trustee of your fund and must exist before the SMSF Deed. The ASIC fee of $636 is paid for the setup which is included in the total SMSF Setup cost of $2,000+GST. The company name must be unique (unlike the SMSF name) and thus it is important that you check the name availability the ASIC website up front to see whether your chosen name is available.
Although there are no hard and fast rules on what you should use for your trustee name (except for it being unique) we always recommend keeping it short so that it is easy to use on applications for banks and other institutions/exchanges and simple. For example, Overton SMSF Pty Ltd is never going to be confused for anything except an SMSF trustee company, and it is short and simple. Overtons Long Name Investment Solutions Pty Ltd, on the other hand, would still be legally compliant but would be painful as it will never fit within the bank’s character limit once the SMSF’s name is factored in as well and is not obviously an SMSF trustee company.
Keep in mind all members of the Super Fund must also be directors of the corporate trustee which means if any of them don’t already have Director ID Numbers they will need to apply online beforehand. You apply via the government, and it is relatively quick and easy for the majority of clients.
Setup of SMSF Deed
Once the corporate trustee has been accepted by ASIC the legal team will set up your SMSF Deed with your name of choice. This Deed provides the foundation of the fund and the powers of the trustee to invest. Our Deeds are not from ‘holes in the wall’ online providers but rather purchased from a specialist SMSF Law Firm in Adelaide. This deed is designed to be broad in its powers to allow trustees to invest in any assets or make any decisions which are permissible under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 (SISA).
Creation of ABN and TFN for an SMSF
Once the SMSF Deed is completed the fund is then registered for an Australian Business Number (ABN) and Tax File Number (TFN) with the Australian Taxation Office. This process is usually instant, but the ATO may decide to perform further checks before issuing the ABN and marking the fund as compliant. The status of the fund can be checked on the Super Fund Lookup website and unfortunately cannot be easily rushed. 99% of the time it is completed by the tax office within a week, but it is something to keep in mind, especially with property settlements.
It is important to note that if you have any overdue personal tax debts or lodgments with the ATO then this may cause delays with your SMSF election. You will not be able to open the bank account and request any rollovers until the fund is showing as complying on Super Fund Lookup.
Bank Account & Rollovers
Once the SMSF Setup Online is completed, then you open a bank account with the bank of your choice. We do not demand clients use a particular bank nor do we have any access to the bank account on behalf of clients. We do create a data feed which is a one-way push from the bank to the software system, but this gives us no logins to the bank or transaction authorities.
Once you have opened your bank account we can then request rollovers for you from your existing superannuation accounts. These rollovers can be either partial (if you want to leave some funds in your industry fund to keep insurances alive for example) or can be full rollovers. These are requested via the ATO SuperStream system and the ATO will perform checks on the request as will the fund you are rolling from. Many Industry Funds will call you as the member prior to rolling any money to double check it is a legitimate request and may request other documents such as certified photo ID before processing the rollover. If you are in a rush for any reason, then we recommend calling your fund as soon as we have completed the rollover request to get them to expedite any requests for additional information.
