Can my SMSF use CMC Markets?

Can my SMSF use CMC MarketsCMC Markets is a UK-based trading platform. CMC Invest is owned by CMC Markets. CMC Invest allows trading in shares (both Australian and international), exchange-traded funds (ETFs), options, cryptocurrencies, warrants, bonds and interest rate securities, managed funds, and listed investment companies (LICs). CMC Markets trades globally in contracts for difference (CFDs), including forex, indices, commodities, and cryptocurrencies.

SMSFs are subject to superannuation laws and regulations and generally invest using CMC Invest, as CFDs are considered high risk. As with any other investment, the fund’s trust deed and investment strategy must permit these investments, and the investments must comply with superannuation laws and regulations.

Can my SMSF invest in cryptocurrencies using CMC Invest?

Yes, it can, but CMC Invest is not regulated (as at 25 June 2026 per their website) under the Corporations Act 2001 in relation to cryptocurrencies; therefore, SMSFs do not have the usual consumer protections. An SMSF can invest in crypto, but it must consider several compliance issues.

Does CMC Invest integrate with my SMSF super software?

Yes, it integrates with most major specialist superannuation software providers. The platform is integrated with Class Super, which we use for our SMSF clients, making reporting more efficient and streamlined.

Does my SMSF directly own the investments made through CMC Invest?

Yes. CMC Invest acts as a broker and typically does not hold investments as the legal owner were possible. Investments acquired through the platform are held directly by the SMSF, provided the account is correctly established in the SMSF’s name, and the fund complies with its trust deed, investment strategy, and superannuation law obligations. However, because a sub-custodian holds cryptocurrencies, it can be difficult to demonstrate, for audit purposes, that the fund owns the crypto tokens. In addition to this foreign share are also custodially held commonly resulting in Part A qualifications which is a minor issue.

How does CMC Invest support audit requirements for an SMSF

CHESS sponsorship for equities traded on a stock exchange provides direct ownership by an SMSF rather than through a custodian. Special SMSF accounts are set up to ensure the title of fund investments correctly reflects the fund’s ownership. A separate ANZ bank account is set up for trading, and the fund’s transaction records are available. A clear audit trail is in place.

How does my SMSF invest using CMC Invest?

Step 1:

Do you have an existing SMSF or do you need to establish one?

We can help you set up a new SMSF; however, we cannot advise you whether it is the right decision for your circumstances. You should seek advice from a financial advisor.

Step 2:

Open a CMC Invest account for an ‘SMSF’.

Open a standard account, as ‘Link a margin loan’ is unlikely to be compliant with superannuation rules. An ANZ Client Money Management account will be opened, but it must be in the name of your SMSF, i.e.  ‘Smith Pty Ltd ATF Smith Family SF’

Details are required for each SMSF member, as well as identity or verification documents, which may include:

  • A photo ID such as a driver’s licence or passport
  • Medicare card

Details about the SMSF trustee

Details about the SMSF, i.e., name, compliance status, Australian Business Number (ABN), tax file number (TFN) (optional) and a copy of the fund’s current signed trust deed.

Complete any further details that may be requested.

Step 3:

Transfer cash from your SMSF bank account into the CMC Invest Account.

Step 4:

Start investing through one account with access to shares, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, managed funds and more.
