How Are Crypto Airdrops Taxed in an SMSF?

How Are Airdrops Taxed in an SMSFGenerally, crypto tokens an SMSF receives as part of an airdrop are taxed as ordinary income when received. When the tokens are sold, they are taxed as a capital gain.

What is a crypto airdrop?

An SMSF with a crypto wallet may receive free tokens or coins as part of a marketing promotion.  A crypto developer may drop new tokens into an SMSF wallet to draw attention to a platform, promote a particular currency or protocol, or reward early users. Generally, your SMSF is a passive recipient of the airdrop; you need little or no effort to receive the new tokens. However, some conditions may apply, such as holding crypto for a specified period or using a specific platform or service.

What are the tax rules?

The ATO treats airdrops as taxable income when an SMSF receives them, and as a capital gain when the coins are sold. The tax rate is 15% when the fund is in accumulation phase, nil if the fund is in full pension phase for the entire financial year, or somewhere in between if in part pension phase. Because the fund does not pay for the new coins, the income is the market value of the coins at the time of receipt. When the new coins are sold, the cost base is the market value when received, plus any incidental costs of acquisition or sale. A 1/3 discount applies to the capital gain if the fund has held the coins for 12 months or longer.

Example – Fred’s SMSF is in 100% accumulation mode and received 4 Solana coins as an airdrop reward. The fund did not pay for the new coins. On 10 January 2025, when the fund received them, 1 Solana coin was valued at $305.05. The fund must include $1,220.20 in its 2025 tax return as income and pay $183.03 in tax at 15%. The new coins were sold on 10 June 2026 for $109.31 per Solana coin, resulting in a capital loss of $782.96. The capital loss was offset against capital gains made in 2026.

When would an airdrop be tax-free in an SMSF?

Income or capital gains in an SMSF are tax-free when arising from a member’s account supporting a retirement phase pension (excluding a transition to retirement income stream); therefore, an airdrop is not taxed. Otherwise, an airdrop with no determinable market value at the time it is received by an SMSF, such as an initial newly minted coin with no prior trading history, is not taxed as income at the date of receipt. However, when sold, it will be subject to capital gains tax with a nil cost base.

Can my SMSF crypto airdrop transactions be tracked by the ATO?

Yes, they can. The ATO matches data from crypto exchanges and can identify SMSF transactions that aren’t reported. For more information about how Crypto is taxed in an SMSF currently checkout our article below:

How can I value my SMSF airdrop?

For airdrops, valuation can only be determined for established coins and is based on the market value when your SMSF receives the coins. Crypto exchanges provide real-time market prices you can use for this purpose. Cryptocurrency prices vary between exchanges due to supply and demand, liquidity, trading volume, and each exchange’s internal pricing model. Your SMSF must have supportable evidence of the market value, clearly documented. However, initial coins generally lack trading data and therefore can have a nil market valuation.

What can I do if my SMSF doesn’t want the airdrop?

You can ignore them, burn them, or hide worthless airdrop coins or tokens. Scam or junk tokens don’t normally harm the fund if you don’t interact with them. Most mainstream wallets let you hide them to clean up the fund’s interface. Hiding doesn’t add security, but it can prevent you from accidentally clicking them and exposing your fund to a malicious event. Burning involves sending a token to an uncontrolled one-way address, which is permanent; you can’t reverse an error.

Any of the above options carries risk and should be undertaken very carefully, with a full understanding of the implications, especially when deciding to burn, as the biggest risk is burning valuable tokens by mistake.

How does my SMSF avoid scam airdrops?

Airdrop scams often appear as legitimate promotions. Scammers want to drain the fund’s wallet or access sensitive information. There are many types of scams, including:

  • Fake marketing profiles.
  • Impersonating the logos, branding, character and style of trusted popular accounts.
  • Fake websites to claim the airdrop rewards – connecting your wallet to one of these means your SMSF’s wallet could be completely drained.
  • Fake tokens sent to the fund’s wallet directly may lead you to a phishing site if you click on it.

The following are some steps that can be taken to prevent scams:

  • Check the URL is legitimate and that it is the official website of the promoter – any request to send crypto before receiving the reward is a red flag. A fake URL will often have a minor misspelling.
  • Always verify the account name, spelling, and follower count (low counts can be indicative of a scammer) – check the announcement against the promoter’s official website or social media.
  • Private keys and seed phrases should never be provided but kept secure.
  • Do not connect your wallet unless you know the website is genuine. A red flag is a random token deposited to your fund’s wallet that wants you to click on a website to unlock your reward.

How do I know when my SMSF has received an airdrop?

Sometimes you don’t realise this has happened. You only find out by checking your wallet and seeing the airdrops deposited. You can carry out manual checks by monitoring X announcements or browsing airdrop calendars. However, a helpful tool, such as a dedicated airdrop checker, can scan the fund’s wallet across multiple potential airdrops to quickly and efficiently identify rewards.

Do not connect your wallet, ensure the airdrop announcement is from an official, verified website, and do not provide the fund’s private keys or seed phrases.
